Today we announce our final poetry challenge of the month: haiku for justice

We’re all still reeling from the trial and guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. He is only the 7th police officer to actually be convicted for murder since 2005, of thousands. We all know this was a step toward, but not the fulfillment of the justice we deserve in the US and around the world. But what does a more just world look like?

Ars Poetica has been a fan of Adam Kiyoshi Fujita’s awesome graffiti work and powerfully uplifting social and political messages for a long time. He is a Brooklyn Based Neon Wizard, and the son of a Japanese Internment Camp survivor, and uses his 20+ years of artistic experience to create public artwork worthy of history books (and selfies)

That’s why for this haiku competition, the winner will have their original poem turned into a limited edition neon graffiti art print by Adam himself in addition to their $500 grand prize.

The haiku prints will be made available for sale here on our website, with 25% of the proceeds going to one of our favorite orgs: Intersectional Environmentalist.

The theme we are inviting you to explore for this competition is JUSTICE. You can apply this however is most meaningful to you. We are thinking about the intersectionality of the word:

Racial justice

Social justice

Food justice

Environmental justice

Justice for the disabled

Justice for LGBTQ people

Justice for victims of abuse

Justice in international conflicts

Justice for George Floyd

…what does restorative, transformative justice look like? We may not be powerful politicians, but as artists it’s our duty to reimagine our world and inspire each other to work toward what we can see.

Adam and the Ars Poetica Poets will choose five finalists from all submissions, and YOU will get to vote on the final winner of the big cash prize and creation of our first ever poetic art print.

Ready? Let’s write.
